Getting to Know… Bree Warren
What springs to mind when you think of the term plus size? Whatever your point of view, Australian curve model cum blogger, Bree Warren, is here to question your perception. Warren first burst onto the scene a few years ago whilst holidaying in New York. “I had been scouted a few times as a teenager, but was always considered a bit too curvy to be a ‘straight size’ model,” explains Warren. What came next was signing with JAG Models as a ‘plus’ model in the Big Apple, as well as with Milk right here in the UK, subsequently starting to make her mark globally, as well as in her native Australia.
Bree cites ASOS, the online fashion behemoth, as one of her first big jobs, and the best training ground for those taking their first steps into the world of modelling. Being the only ASOS Curve model at that time, she picked up tips and tricks from the other girls in the game. Unsurprisingly, Bree cites any brand that has allowed her to shoot in far flung locations as her ultimate favourites because, “It doesn’t feel like work when I’m immersed in a beautiful place.”
In recent years, Bree has been vocal about what it means to be a ‘plus-size’ model in the 21st century. In 2015 she penned a thought-provoking piece for The Daily Telegraph affirming, “To me, the whole idea of labelling models based on size is so passé.” Fast forward to 2017 and Bree says that the body diversity movement has come a long way. “I’ve shot campaigns with mainstream brands that wanted to break the mould, featuring models with a variety of shapes and sizes. It’s only just the beginning of a big shift in the industry – models should reflect the beautiful diversity in our society”.
Arcadia cover girl, English model Iskra Lawrence, a fellow JAG Models recruit, is also founding Managing Editor at Runway Riot, a fashion, style, and beauty site celebrating women of all sizes, shapes and colours. “I love Iskra! She is using her platform to promote such a powerful and important message of body positivity. I think it’s so important that all of us models support each other in our work and campaigns: because after all we’re all fighting on the same team!”
But Iskra isn’t the only model riding the social media wave. In between juggling her modelling duties on both sides of the pond, Bree is kept busy updating her 69.5k Instagram followers on her worldly adventures. “Social media has given me a voice and I use my platform to share my accomplishments and messages. It’s amazing that by showcasing how confident I am in my own skin, I can inspire other girls to be more confident in theirs. Trolls show their face from time to time, but it comes with the territory. You have to take it all with a pinch of salt and know that the good outweighs the bad!”
Bree is currently the voice behind not one, but two blogs, one of which is Bree Warren. The second, The Wave Provocateur, a travel blog taking you to some of the world’s best surfing destinations, is lovingly put together with Mitch McCann, Bree’s significant other. The pair are working together to build a unique and refreshing online destination for all things surf, sun and sand. “We both love travelling and photography, so it seemed like the perfect fit! It’s funny, we have different perspectives, but our work compliments each other. He’ll be out there in the middle of the night braving freezing temperatures capturing amazing sights like the northern lights, whereas I channel my journalism degree to edit and curate the images.”
When pressed to pick a preferred destination from the countless visited, the globetrotting Bree finds it near impossible! “I am always asked this question and I say a different place near enough every time because I have so many favourites – it’s so hard to pinpoint one place! Panama was pretty amazing. Right now I’m editing photos from mine and Mitch’s stay at Amangiri in Utah. That was probably the most luxurious place we’ve ever visited and it was incredible!”
But with a successful modelling career and two blogs on the go, does Bree find it hard to juggle business and pleasure? “2016 was a busy year that taught me a lot about time management. As a model, you never really know your schedule until the last minute, so I’ve learned how to maximise my time and make use of being on the go. Countless posts on Instagram and BreeWarren.com were put out there from planes, airports and hotel rooms.”
After spending Christmas down under with her friends and family in Noosa, Bree heads back to New York at the end January, “and can’t wait to see what 2017 has in store!” Watch this space.
