The Poetry Corner: Sit from The Sun Still Rises by Munna Abdelhady

Sit is taken from ‘The Sun Still Rises’, a beautiful collection of poetry by Munna Abdelhady. Growing up in Pennsylvania, being a woman of colour was unfamiliar but poetry gave Munna a voice when she felt
like she didn’t have one.

Sit

Before you look at the mess

Sit

I can explain

It is covered in dirt and destruction because my mind has been stuck in a maze

Sit

I cannot pick up the trash from last Sunday or the clothes from weeks ago

My hands just will not move

Sit

Stop screaming about the chaos I know it is chaotic

Sit

See me

For the mess that I am not the mess that I made
