4 Things That Cause Travel Stress (And What To Do About Them)

Taking a trip is often thought of as a fun, relaxing experience. Yet, while your time away might ultimately turn out that way, it’s also possible that you’ll hit a few bumps along the way.

After all, things don’t always go to plan when you’re so far away from home, and even when things are mostly OK, there’s always the chance that you’ll feel a little anxious and stressed, especially if you only travel every so often.

The good news is that while there are plenty of things that can cause travel stress, there are also ways to keep them in check. In this post, we’ll run through some of the most common travel-related relaxation-busters, as well as their solutions.

Pre-Travel Rush

It’ll be all nice and well when you’re at your travel destination, when all you have to do is enjoy all that it has to offer, but before you depart? That can be tricky, since you’ll know that you have to get everything ready, but you’ll also likely need to continue managing all your usual responsibilities.

Trying to take care of everything the night before you fly is a surefire way to keep your stress levels elevated. Instead, take the slow approach to getting prepared and start in the week before you fly. You’ll feel better knowing that your bags are mostly packed, you have all your travel documents sorted, and so on.

Departure Stress

Going to the airport, boarding a plane, and flying to another country should be fun, but it often turns out to be the opposite. Rushing to the airport with heavy bags is a chaotic experience that can leave you questioning why you voluntarily chose to travel abroad.

The mistake people often make is relying on public transport to reach the airport. With that, you’re placing your stress levels in the hands of trains and buses, which are often delayed. It’s nearly always better to drive to the airport, especially since airport parking is increasingly affordable. That’ll allow you to arrive for your flight well ahead of the departure time, providing the perfect opportunity to have a pre-getaway airport drink.

Doing Too Much

It’s fun to think ahead to all the fun things you’ll do once you’re travelling, but there’s also the risk that you’ll look ahead to doing too much. While you’ll want to make the most of your time in your chosen destination, it’s also important to keep in mind that moving from one activity to the next can be exhausting and will eat into the amount of relaxation time. It’s a good idea to accept that you can’t do everything, and simply choose the things that genuinely interest you. You can always return in the future if you want to see more of the place!

‘What If’ Scenarios
Because you’re heading into the unknown, travelling can seem a little scary — and that can be stressful. But imagining what could happen detracts from the enjoyment. Instead of imagining the worst-case scenarios, simply make sure that you’re covered as best you can (understanding the risks, getting insurance), and embrace the trip.
