When it comes to luxury, few places capture the magic of bustling London quite like the Sheraton Grand London Park Lane. Built in 1927 during the Art Deco era, the Sheraton Grand quickly became a London institution; a glamorous hub where socialites, celebrities, and aristocrats would gather. Nearly a century later, it continues to channel that golden-age spirit, with stunning interiors and preserved details like the original 1928 building contracts proudly displayed in glass cabinets – a hotel that truly honours its heritage.
This central London icon boasts period features throughout, effortlessly combining old-school elegance with warm hospitality. From the inviting lounge to the meticulously restored ballroom, every detail creates a sense of belonging, the kind that keeps first-time visitors immediately planning their next trip.
Highlights are many, but Palm Court where afternoon tea is served is a standout. Its sweeping views from elegant half-moon booths and grand ceiling design make it the perfect setting for refined teas, evening cocktails, and quiet indulgence in the heart of the city.
The new afternoon tea collaboration with the theatre production The Great Gatsby: A New Musical is a spectacle not to be missed. Every small detail is elegant and refined, reflecting everything the Gatsby era stood for. Capturing the spirit and energy of the show, The Great Gatsby: Only Afternoon Tea! takes its name from the musical’s catchy number Only Tea! A playful nod to one of its standout moments.
Now, when it comes to afternoon teas, we’ve sampled many, but this one is truly special. Before your tower of treats arrives, you’re served the most delicate amuse-bouche: a Rockefeller Smoked Salmon Tart with dill crème and cucumber pearls. As pre-tea treats go, this one ranks highly.
The sandwich selection includes classics with a twist — the East Egg Truffle Salad, a delicate mix of summer truffle and heritage egg, and our favourite (so much so we ordered seconds): the Gatsby Club, layered with roast chicken and pancetta.
Sweet treats bring the drama, from a zingy Lemon & Jazz-mine Meringue Pie to Daisy’s Tropical Choux, and a gold-dusted Roaring Opera cake that captures Gatsby’s flair for excess. The Gatsby Forest Gâteau offers a rich, kirsch-soaked finish, served with warm scones in a branded Palm Court cotton muslin bag – a thoughtful touch that keeps them toasty (honestly, why don’t more hotels do this?) Pair with your choice of fine teas; the rose blend was a standout and, of course, should be enjoyed alongside a glass of chilled rosé Champagne. It would be rude not to indulge with a little sparkle for such an opulent experience, in true 1920s style.
A themed cocktail menu in Palm Court completes the experience. Highlights include the Gatsby Gold Rush with WhistlePig Rye, the crisp Green Light Martini, and the sparkling Flapper’s Fizz, plus, a floral mocktail, Daisy’s Delight, for those opting for a booze-free toast.
A visit to Italian restaurant Mercante is a must, particularly to experience the immersive all-day Italian menu. Order the spaghetti carbonara – yes, nothing out of the ordinary here, but classics executed this well deserve a round of applause. The waiter’s tableside carbonara pasta preparation is a true highlight. Watch as the heat from the torch and the fresh pasta melts the cheese inside the Parmigiano wheel, creating a creamy, flavourful sauce. Made fresh right at your table, it’s a glorious iPhone moment.
The focaccia was pillowy soft and worth going back for alone, while the saffron arancini and Amalfi lemon sorbet perfectly captured the essence of the Amalfi Coast. Scooped-out lemons served with zingy and tangy sorbet, paired with views of red double-deckers passing by – it’s fair to say, it’s a mood. Food lovers are guaranteed an unforgettable Italian dining experience with an iconic city backdrop.
Breakfast also takes place at Mercante, with a decadent buffet offering everything you could hope for and more; a smoothie bar, smoked salmon, freshly cut fruit, an array of artisan breads and pastries, and an omelette station.
With all that indulgence, you’ll be pleased to know a fully equipped gym is located on the hotel’s lower-ground level and open 24 hours a day.
Another highlight is the location – ideally positioned in the heart of Mayfair, close to the capital’s top tourist and shopping destinations. Buckingham Palace is within walking distance, as well as London’s iconic Piccadilly Circus, Burlington Arcade and Fortnum & Mason for souvenir tea and biscuit shopping.
But perhaps the hotel’s greatest asset lies in its ability to make every guest feel perfectly at home – making the Sheraton Grand London Park Lane a place you’ll want to return to, time and time again.
