A Winter Escape on the Thames: Inside London Marriott Hotel County Hall

If you’re searching for that special occasion hotel that ticks all the boxes as the perfect location for exploring London’s best winter attractions while offering luxurious facilities and steeped in British history, then look no further than London Marriott Hotel County Hall.

From the moment you arrive, you know you’re in for something spectacular. The entrance is as grand as it gets, leading through a towering archway into a central courtyard, where an iron crown sculpture immediately sets a regal tone.

A Historic Building with Thoughtful Design

Originally opened in 1922 as the headquarters of local government, County Hall’s renovation has been sympathetic to the building’s bones. Many original 1920s features remain throughout, from the vaulted ceilings, panelled walls to the original fireplaces.

Reception

Reception is tastefully decorated and cosy…just what you want when stepping into a hotel on a cold winter’s day, featuring plush navy velvet sofas, and armchairs perfect for relaxing after travelling. There’s a sweet shop for little ones and grown-ups alike, with a mulled wine station adding to the festive winter feel.

The reception team are outstanding – warm, attentive, and thoughtful. From offering cartons of water for our day ahead sightseeing, to activity packs for children and balloons for the smallest guests, they make everyone feel instantly at home.

Room with a View

With 241 guest rooms spread across six floors, we opted for a family room on the sixth floor. Our room, set along the circular corridor, was accessed via a small additional set of steps, an enchanting touch that adds to the excitement of the room reveal.

It’s rare to step into a London hotel room and be met with panoramic, floor-to-ceiling views, but this room really has it all. A private balcony opens up to views of the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben to one side, the River Thames and New Scotland Yard directly ahead, and the London Eye to the right.

Inside, the room is stylish and modern, with thoughtful details referencing the building’s history throughout. Think colourful London-inspired artwork with pigeons and beagles in baker boy hats, alongside a flat-screen TV. There are two generous double beds with luxury bedding and sleek black leather headboards, paired with a cosy reading corner featuring an orange velvet chair. Beautifully illustrated maps highlight County Hall landmarks and the surrounding views.

For younger guests, the cutest towels shaped into penguins are waiting on the beds, along with kid-sized robes, marching soldier bear slippers, and soldier teddies.

The bathroom continues the British theme, stocked with full-sized Molton Brown toiletries, a rather spacious sink, and a walk-in powerful shower. Black-and-white tiled mosaic flooring, crisp white wall tiling, and London borough map wallpaper complete the look.

Gillray’s Steakhouse & Bar

Gillray’s Steakhouse & Bar is where you’ll find some of the juiciest steaks in London (trust us, we’ve sampled a lot), teamed with spectacular views over the River Thames. Named after James Gillray, the famed late-18th-century political caricaturist, the restaurant showcases come of his iconic illustrations throughout.

Flying the flag for locally sourced ingredients, Gillray’s works closely with Kent and Essex farms and a trusted father-and-son butcher. All steaks are dry-aged in a Himalayan salt chamber, which results in an exceptional depth of flavour.

The décor reflects the jazz-infused Art Deco era beautifully, with floor-to-ceiling oak-panelled walls, marble counters, and sparkly chandeliers. The service combines the perfect balance – knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive, without ever feeling rushed for the next sitting to arrive.

To start, Yorkshire puddings with creamy baby horseradish are brought to the table for grazing on. Then comes the knife selection – a wonderfully theatrical moment as our waiter presents a curated box of steak knives.

And the steak? Everything you want it to be. Succulent, rich, and marbled to perfection. We opted for a sticky tomato and bacon jam sauce (a first and a revelation), alongside proper triple-cooked chunky chips that can be dressed up with truffle or rosemary seasoning, and creamed spinach that felt indulgent without being heavy, naturally paired with a carafe of Pinot Noir.

The menu features all the classic headliners – fillet, sirloin, and T-bone, while desserts delivered too…if you have room that is. The sticky toffee pudding was a standout and didn’t disappoint.

Families are very well catered for, with creative activity menus featuring puzzles, riddles, and mazes, all tied into a London theme, alongside all the classic kids’ favourites.

Breakfast is also served here the following morning. You can go all in with a dry-aged sirloin steak Benedict, or keep things lighter with omelettes, chia puddings, smashed avocado on toast, or a full English.

The Bar at Gillray’s

Gillray’s Bar is somewhere you’ll happily lose track of time, even over a hot pot of tea, while soaking up those jaw-dropping views. Pops of mustard and gold, banquette seating, and expansive windows create the ultimate selfie backdrop, with Big Ben peeking through.

The atmosphere feels like an exclusive members’ club. Gin lovers will be in heaven, with over 100 gins (and counting), plus a proudly British cocktail list featuring drinks such as the House of Lords, A Street Crier, and the Jubilee.

The Library

The Library is a true hidden treasure. Once the members’ library of London’s County Council, it feels like stepping back in time. Original oak bookcases line the room, filled with books and statues of classical figures.

This is where afternoon tea is served – an elegant, historical setting that’s perfect for a girls’ get-together or a special occasion.

Wellness Facilities

We always judge a hotel by its wellness facilities, and County Hall does not disappoint. The state-of-the-art gym combines vaulted ceilings with tasteful décor and excellent natural light. Fully equipped with Technogym equipment, it’s a space you’ll genuinely enjoy working out in.

Just opposite up a small set of stars is the hotel’s 25-metre swimming pool, it’s picturesque with lots of natural lighting from the array of windows and palm trees – perfect for little ones wanting a splash before the day starts exploring nearby attractions like the London Eye, Shrek’s Adventure, and Sea Life London Aquarium.

Final Thoughts

London Marriott Hotel County Hall is one of London’s hidden gems. You’re moments away from the buzz of Westminster Bridge and the Southbank yet enjoy front-row views paired with exceptional hospitality from a more peaceful vantage point.

It’s rare to find a hotel that suits all ages, occasions, and travel styles – but this one truly has it all. And now we’re left wondering…just how magical must it be to stay here on New Year’s Eve?
