In the days leading up to the official reveal, the internet was already in a frenzy. After cryptic teasers began appearing online, watch enthusiasts flooded social media with theories, speculative renders and AI-generated concepts imagining what an Audemars Piguet × Swatch collaboration might look like. Forums, Instagram accounts and TikTok creators dissected every detail, with many convinced the partnership would become one of the year’s most talked-about watch releases long before the first official images were unveiled.
In a collaboration few could have predicted, yet somehow makes perfect sense, Audemars Piguet and Swatch have joined forces to reimagine one of the most recognisable silhouettes in modern watchmaking. The result is Royal Pop: an audacious new collection that fuses the rebellious spirit of Pop Art with the design codes of the legendary Royal Oak, transforming the icon into a playful pocket watch unlike anything currently on the market.

Launching in May 2026, the collection draws inspiration from two cult classics: Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak, first introduced in 1972, and the vibrant Swatch POP watches that defined the exuberance of the 1980s. Together, they create something intentionally disruptive, a timepiece liberated from the wrist and designed to be worn however the owner chooses.
At the heart of the Royal Pop concept is versatility. Suspended from a leather lanyard detailed with contrasting stitching, the watches can be worn around the neck, carried in a pocket, attached to a handbag or styled as a wristwatch. With three interchangeable lanyard lengths and a removable stand that transforms the piece into a miniature desk clock, the collection deliberately challenges traditional ideas of how a luxury watch should be worn.

The collection comprises eight Swiss-made Bioceramic models, a symbolic reference to the eight-sided bezel and eight signature screws of the Royal Oak. Six models adopt a classic Lépine-style pocket watch layout with the crown positioned at 12 o’clock and a minimalist two-hand display, while two Savonnette-style versions place the crown at 3 o’clock and incorporate a small seconds subdial at six o’clock.
Inside each model sits a newly developed hand-wound version of Swatch’s groundbreaking SISTEM51 movement. Featuring 15 active patents, the movement remains one of the most technically innovative achievements in contemporary Swiss watchmaking, assembled entirely through an automated production process. Offering more than 90 hours of power reserve, laser-regulated precision and an anti-magnetic Nivachron™ balance spring developed in collaboration with Audemars Piguet, the movement is partially revealed through a transparent caseback unique to each colourway.

Beyond its playful aesthetic, the Royal Pop collection is rich in nuanced references to the Royal Oak’s historic design language. The instantly recognisable “Petite Tapisserie” dial pattern appears across all eight models, while the octagonal bezel and exposed hexagonal screws, once considered radically unconventional in luxury watchmaking — remain central to the design. One standout model, HUIT BLANC, pushes this further with each of its eight bezel screws rendered in a different colour.
The collection also introduces several technical innovations. The construction of the case alone required eight additional patents, reflecting the complexity of recreating the Royal Oak’s layered geometry in Bioceramic form. One particularly inventive feature is the exposed barrel drum, which doubles as a visual power reserve indicator. When the chambers appear grey, the mainspring coils are visible, signalling the watch requires winding. Once fully wound, the chambers shift to gold as the compressed spring disappears from view.

Finishing details remain true to the spirit of both houses. Vertical satin brushing on the bezel and caseback echoes the finishing techniques of the original Royal Oak, while Grade A Super-LumiNova® ensures strong nighttime visibility. Sapphire crystals on both the front and rear feature anti-reflective coatings, and the Bioceramic construction, composed of ceramic powder and biosourced material derived from castor oil, gives the watches an unexpectedly smooth and tactile finish.
As with previous Swatch collaborations, exclusivity will remain part of the appeal. The Audemars Piguet × Swatch Royal Pop collection launches exclusively at selected Swatch boutiques from 16 May 2026, with purchases limited to one watch per person, per day, per store.

Bold, irreverent and deeply self-aware, Royal Pop feels less like a conventional collaboration and more like a cultural provocation, one that asks whether fine watchmaking can still surprise us.
