There is something deeply satisfying about an English pub done properly. It is a feeling well known to those who have allowed an afternoon to slowly move into the evening, surrounded by warmth and genuinely good company. Adding good food to a place so closely tied to heritage and history feels, quite simply, special. Especially when it comes together so naturally. In south Oxfordshire, two such places stand out as the sort of English pubs you would recommend to friends.

The Chequers at Berrick Salome
Sitting at the heart of the rural village of Berrick Salome, near Benson and Wallingford, you will find The Chequers. This lovely Grade II–listed country pub with roots stretching back to the 17th century. Built from traditional brick and flint, it wears its history proudly.
Inside, the atmosphere delivers precisely what one hopes for from a winter weekend away. The cosy corners, the gentle drama of roaring fires, and the generous welcome of muddy boots and well-behaved dogs alike. It is in the thoughtfully positioned dining spaces, however, that the team truly excels. This is a dining experience that is designed to be intimate. With beautifully set tables, alongside fireplaces and deep-set windows set into thick, century-old walls. There is also a dining area crowned by a beautifully vaulted ceiling which is perfect if you are gathering a larger group too. This is a place that is designed for long and enjoyable meals.

The kitchen is led by head chef Danny Thomas, who trained under Gordon Ramsay. Danny is superb, and his creations are full of incredible flavours and an absolute delight on both the palate as well as the eye. The philosophy here is to eat well. And you absolutely will. Its locally sourced goodness at its finest.
The menu features elevated pub classics that sit alongside dishes that really showcase chef Danny’s creativity. Among a thoughtfully curated selection, the delicious menu has several that stand out, although in all honesty, good luck choosing. The beef short rib crumpet, delectable. A clever seasonal nod to truffle mushroom toast, perfection. The lamb rump, beautifully judged and carefully garnished, and the pie of the day that gave a gentle reminder of why this dish remains so nostalgic and comforting. Special thanks has to go to Fraser, whose guidance throughout the evening ensured every craving found its ideal menu match.

You cannot forget nor forgo desserts here. The seasonal winter berry cheesecake and the sticky toffee pudding will make you realise no matter how full you are, you somehow summon a second appetite.
Service is warm and attentive, and a lovely balance between friendly and polished. It must be said that dietary requirements are thoughtfully catered for, and the kids are genuinely considered. Truly, it’s hard to beat a well-spent evening here. The drinks offering is as impressive as the food, a brilliant wine list, excellent local cask ales and guest beers, alongside seasonal cocktails and mocktails. The only real question will be how soon one can reasonably return?

The Crown at Benson
After a memorable meal, the only sensible next step is somewhere equally inviting to settle in and stay awhile. Just a mile away, its sister pub, The Crown at Benson, offers precisely that. Part of The Crown’s charm lies in how naturally it belongs to its community. From the moment you step inside this Historic South Oxfordshire Village Pub, you feel warmly welcomed, and you will notice two things immediately. First is the magnificent inglenook fireplace, home to two of the best seats in the house. The second is the gentle flicker of candlelight and small vases of flowers all over the pub. There is an unmistakable charm to the space.
Shaped by the locals who call this beautiful corner of England home, The Crown Inn leans into life’s smaller and familiar joys, offering both residents and those fortunate enough to stay a night or few exactly what they come for. At its helm is experienced landlord and hospitality operator John Thirlway, who since 2024 has worked alongside his team to maintain the true spirit of the pub, and provide a home-away-from-home for guests. And, if you’re lucky, you may even be introduced to Buddy, his charming new puppy!

The Crown Inn sits in the heart of the picturesque village of Benson, making it an ideal base for walkers and outdoor enthusiasts. From here, you can explore scenic Oxfordshire trails, charming countryside paths, and historic villages nearby. After a day of walking or cycling, the inn’s comfortable, relaxed rooms provide the perfect place to rest and recharge.
The Chequers joins The Crown at Benson as the newest member of Hannah Dickson’s Copper Pot Pub Company portfolio, a collection of small, historic inns. It is the idyllic village settings and rich architectural character that earns them both a spot on this portfolio. About 20 km from Oxford and just over 30 km from Blenheim Palace, they offer easy access to both local landmarks and wider adventures.

For a weekend of fireside indulgence and timeless pub charm, it is hard to imagine a more perfectly suited pair for a weekend destination.
