A Tale of Lech, Austria

Lech Zürs am Arlberg, in Vorarlberg is a winter wonderland and a favourite of European royalty. The Dutch royals spend their family vacation there every February for over 60 years and Monaco’s Princess Caroline of Hanover, daughter of Grace Kelly is also a frequent visitor.

Princess Diana visited often during the 90s and was often spotted on the slopes with Prince William and Prince Harry. 

Ski and snowboard enthusiasts flock like bees to a honeypot to Austria’s largest ski resort and the fifth largest in the world. Set against the majestic snow capped mountains, this ethereal resort is like something from a fairytale.

Here is our curated itinerary for a perfect day spent in Lech… 

7am – Wake up at Severin*s Lech

Situated on a tranquil mountain slope with views of the picture-perfect alpine landscape, Severin*s Lech is a melting pot of contemporary touches and traditional ideas. Stay in one of the elegant Senior Suites which range from 62 and 67 m² in size. It boasts a sprawling living and sleeping area with a bed by Wittmann, a flatscreen television by Loewe, Revox sound systems, iPads integrated into the walls for controlling the multimedia and lighting and beautiful neutral furniture by Italian label Minotti.

All of the rooms at Severin*s Lech offer stunning mountain scenery from a private terrace or balcony. Each room has its own fireplace, the perfect place to enjoy the welcome champagne which is served on arrival. There is even a parking space in Severin*s Lech’s basement car park for each suite, a shuttle service to the ski lift and your own heated locker in the ski room.

Breakfast is an extravagant affair at Severin*s Lech, expect a feast fit for royalty. The banquet begins with homemade smoothies and fresh juices as well as a steaming hot cup of coffee or tea. This is followed by local Alpine berries, pastries and charcuterie. There is also a menu offering an array of delicious dishes including buttery local smoked salmon and some of the most decadent cheesy eggs from your wildest dreams.

9am – Hit the Slopes

With 87 ski lifts, more than 300 kilometers of majestic ski runs and 200 kilometers off high Alpine deep snow runs, ski and snowboarders are spoilt for choice. For the more advanced and adventurous skiers, there are world-class highly-trained ski guides that take off-piste lovers to the most breathtaking viewing platforms.

So whether you are a beginner, advanced or in search of adventure there are blue, red, black runs and nursery slopes that offer the perfect conditions for every level.

4pm – Unwind at Severin*s Spa

After a busy day on the slopes, there is no better place to unwind than in the serenity of Severin*s spa. There is a glorious 12.5m pool complete with underwater bubble loungers and a waterfall. There are also two saunas which are ideal for relaxing aching post-ski muscles.

Overlooking the swimming pool is a chic contemporary fitness centre complete with Technogym equipment. There is an exercise bike, stepper, a pair of treadmills and a Plurima Wall.

After a workout, swim or relaxing moment in the sauna there are an array of complimentary hot and cold drinks and snacks available.

6pm – Carriage Ride

The most spectacular way to experience Lech is by a romantic horse-drawn sleigh. These majestic black beauties are wonderfully taken care of and adored by visitors and locals like.

By day, take in the beautiful panoramic views whilst you listen to the distant roar of the Lech river. By night, under a blanket of stars, wrap up under a cosy blanket in the cool mountain air whilst you admire the beautifully lit houses that glow like fireflies in the darkness.

8pm – Fondue and Champagne at Hus Nr. 8

Hus Nr. 8 is the jewel in the crown of Lech. So idyllic it looks as though it has come straight from a fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen.

It is part of the parade of renovated Walser houses, located at the entrance to Lech. This local icon dates back to 1760 when it was first mentioned in a document. It is so cosy and charming and guests are instantly made to feel at home.

Expect delicious home-style Austrian cuisine such as the legendary Walser Cheese Soup alongside tasty fried chicken. At the heart of Hus Nr. 8 are the world-famous decadent fondues, perfectly paired with a chilled flute of champagne.
