Esmeralda’s could easily have leaned too polished, too proper, too Mayfair. Instead, it has energy. Hidden inside Mandarin Oriental Mayfair, this new late-night lounge gets the balance right with live music, sharp cocktails and just enough indulgence to make staying out feel like the only sensible option.
Open from 8pm until late, Thursday to Saturday, Esmeralda’s is built around a six-piece resident band playing soul, funk and disco, with DJ sets in between to keep the room moving. That live music focus is what gives it its pulse. This is not one of those places where the soundtrack fades into the background while everyone looks around the room. The music is the point, and it gives the whole space a rhythm that feels lively rather than staged.

There is a slick New York influence running through it too, but thankfully it does not feel forced. The room has glamour, yes, but also a bit of swagger, which stops it from slipping into the usual Mayfair stiffness. It feels grown-up without being boring, polished without losing its sense of fun.
The cocktails, created by Anna Sebastian Hospitality, follow the same formula. Familiar, but with more personality. The Dubai Layover reworks the Espresso Martini with pistachio-infused Belvedere vodka, tahini and dark chocolate, making it richer and far more interesting than the standard version. The Paloma-Politan mixes Patrón Silver and mezcal with grapefruit, cranberry, black pepper and cardamom bitters for something bright with a smoky edge, while the East Coast Matcha, a clarified martini with gin, matcha, blueberry and coconut rum, is one of the more surprising highlights.

Food comes with the same slightly mischievous spirit. This is late-night dining that knows exactly what kind of evening it is serving. There are house-smoked Martini olives, Jersey oysters, pepperoni pizzetta, skinny fries with truffle mayo and a buttery lobster roll, alongside signatures including a truffle-Mornay hotdog, mini beef burgers and a caviar nugget topped with Ossetra. Even dessert keeps things playful, with a towering strawberry sundae and warm fudge brownie finishing the night on a suitably over-the-top note.
Founded by twins Lee and Nicky Caulfield, whose backgrounds span luxury hospitality and live entertainment, Esmeralda’s feels well-judged from every angle. One of its smartest moves is the strict no-photo policy, which gives the room a sense of ease that is increasingly rare in London. People are here to actually enjoy themselves, not just prove they were there.

Then, as a final flourish, every bill comes with a complimentary mini champagne. A little extra, yes, but that is also what makes Esmeralda’s work. It knows what kind of night it wants to give you, and commits to it fully.
