This September, a beloved noughties icon steps back into the spotlight. British luxury house Mulberry is relaunching its Roxanne bag with a fantastical new campaign starring none other than Cynthia Erivo, the Oscar-nominated, Emmy, Grammy, and Tony-winning force of nature whose style is as bold and multifaceted as her artistry.
First introduced in 2004 and immortalised on the arms of Kate Moss, Alexa Chung, and Mary-Kate Olsen, the Roxanne was the ultimate statement bag of its era—punky yet romantic, practical yet daring. Now, Mulberry invites us to fall in love with it all over again.
This revival isn’t simply about nostalgia. Alongside the original design, available via The Mulberry Exchange, the Roxanne family expands with four distinct iterations: the Roxanne and Small Roxanne, both faithful to the spirit of the original with its brass buckle hardware and Y2K attitude, and two brand-new silhouettes—the Roxanne Shoulder Bagand Mini Roxanne Shoulder Bag—streamlined for modern life without sacrificing the craftsmanship Mulberry is known for. Each bag is meticulously constructed from 44 individual pattern pieces by the brand’s highly skilled artisans, a nod to Mulberry’s legacy of British manufacturing excellence.
At the heart of the campaign is a dreamscape created by Tim Walker, whose surreal lens transforms Cynthia Erivo into the embodiment of the Mulberry spirit. Styled by Kate Phelan, Erivo is seen in a playful, warped interior filled with rope swings, glowing fireplaces, and richly textured carpets—a world that feels equal parts fairytale and fashion fantasy.
The story doesn’t end with the imagery. Across eight intimate Mulberry Moments films, Erivo sits down with fashion journalist Recho Omondi to explore everything from her earliest fashion memories to her philosophy on style as an act of self-expression.
“As a born and bred Londoner, I remember longing for a Mulberry – the ultimate statement bag,” says Erivo. “The campaign has captured the Roxanne’s rebellious and romantic spirit, something that represents my own style.”
With 100% of the leather in the collection sourced from environmentally accredited tanneries and Mulberry’s B Corp certification achieved in 2024, this revival speaks to both heritage and modern responsibility.
The Roxanne collection launches September 8, 2025, with prices starting at £795. For those who remember its heyday—and a new generation discovering its charm—this is more than a relaunch. It’s a resurrection.
