A Taste of Portugal at Joia Battersea Power Station

London’s extensive food scene often leans on the familiar — Italian, French and Japanese cuisine. Classics we love, yet so ubiquitous they begin to blur together. Joia in Battersea offers a welcome escape. Sitting on the 15th floor of the art’otel, it presents a bold, confident take on Iberian cuisine, led by Henrique Sá Pessoa, one of Portugal’s most respected culinary voices and a two-time Michelin-star holder. Henrique draws on the flavours he knows best, sharing the essence of his homeland through dishes rooted in tradition.

As you step into the dining room, the panoramic, floor-to-ceiling windows immediately draw your eye, framing the restored industrial silhouette of Battersea Power Station. Its iconic chimneys sit almost at eye level, a view that feels rare in London. Dim lighting, warm interiors, and a lively buzz make the room feel both elegant and relaxed, subtly transporting you out of the city. London has no shortage of sky-high restaurants, yet Joia feels different.

The menu only reinforces that feeling. You’re spoilt for choice, so much so that narrowing it down feels impossible, a perfect excuse to return again and again. Start with Seared Yellowfin Tuna, beautifully caramelised and balanced by a vibrant green olive sauce, black garlic aioli, and crisp yam chips.

Follow on with a spread of my tapas favourites. The Mushroom Escabeche, bright and earthy, with pickled wild mushrooms, silky confit egg yolk, and fresh herbs. Patatas Bravas, are golden and comforting, topped with creamy alioli and punchy salsa brava. And the Croquetas Flight, is a trio of indulgent jamón papada, dramatic squid ink, and the chef’s rotating special, each a small delight.

Mains are made for sharing. Choose between the rich, deeply comforting Slow-Cooked Lamb Shank, so tender it falls effortlessly off the bone, served with fragrant bomba rice, chorizo, and aioli. Or indulge in the Arroz de Marisco, a luxurious taste of the sea with native lobster tail, mussels, and perfectly seasoned rice.

Dessert is not to be missed. Opt for Torrija, the warm, caramelised brioche with a moist decadent centre, accompanied by silky Madeira ice cream, offering a sweet, nostalgic finish.

Joia, Portuguese for “jewel”, lives up to its name. Each dish feels like a small treasure, rich in flavour, craft, and discovery. This philosophy carries through to the drinks with signature cocktails inspired by ten precious Iberian gems, expertly composed by Michela Castiglioni, including two thoughtfully crafted non-alcoholic options.

High above London, Joia offers a taste of Portugal, where every bite, sip, and view feels like a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.
