LES EXCLUSIFS DE CHANEL: Inside the House’s Most Exclusive Fragrance Collection

Luxury is often defined by what we can see. A beautifully crafted handbag. An exquisitely tailored jacket. A piece of High Jewellery that catches the light. But at CHANEL, some of the greatest luxuries are invisible. They live within memories, craftsmanship and scent.

Last month, ARCADIA was invited to the Salon de Parfums on the 6th floorp hidden away inside Harrods on the 6th floor to celebrate LES EXCLUSIFS DE CHANEL.

Far removed from the bustle of the beauty floor, it was an afternoon unlike any traditional fragrance launch. There were no grand presentations or theatrical reveals. Instead, we were immersed in the world of Gabrielle Chanel herself.

Over several hours, we explored the hidden symbols that shaped the House, discovered the remarkable stories behind some of its most treasured fragrances and experienced perfume in the way CHANEL has always intended: as something deeply personal.

For ARCADIA, it felt like returning to a story we had already begun. Because long before sitting inside the salon at Harrods, we had travelled to Grasse to witness where that story truly begins.

From the Fields of Grasse

Every great CHANEL fragrance starts hundreds of miles from Paris. It starts in Grasse.

ARCADIA has been fortunate enough to experience that journey first-hand, joining Joseph Mul during the annual May Rose harvest in the fields that have become synonymous with CHANEL fragrance. Walking beside Joseph and his team as they carefully gathered Rosa centifolia by hand in the cool morning air was a reminder that luxury begins long before perfume reaches a bottle.

Every flower must be picked before the sun becomes too strong. Every petal is handled with extraordinary care.

From the fields, we followed the harvest directly to CHANEL’s nearby production facilities, watching those freshly picked flowers begin their transformation into precious fragrance oils within hours. It is a process designed to preserve every delicate olfactory molecule before it has a chance to disappear.

Since 1987, CHANEL has worked exclusively with the Mul family, preserving generations of agricultural expertise while protecting some of the finest natural ingredients in modern perfumery. It is one of the few fragrance houses in the world to oversee such an extraordinary journey—from flower to bottle—ensuring that every stage reflects the uncompromising standards of the House.

Standing in those fields changes the way you experience fragrance forever.

The Fragrance That Changed Everything

To understand LES EXCLUSIFS DE CHANEL, you first have to understand the fragrance that changed history.

By 1921, Gabrielle Chanel had already revolutionised fashion, liberating women from restrictive silhouettes in favour of elegance, movement and simplicity. Her next ambition was even more radical. She wanted to create a perfume unlike anything the world had experienced before. Working with Ernest Beaux, former perfumer to the Russian Imperial Court, Gabrielle Chanel rejected the idea of reproducing nature.

She wanted something composed. Something modern. Something crafted with the same precision as couture. As she famously described it, she wanted “a woman’s perfume with the scent of a woman.”

When Beaux presented several compositions, Gabrielle Chanel chose the fifth. Her response was simple.

“No name. Just a number.”

That decision gave birth to N°5, forever changing the language of perfumery and establishing a philosophy that continues to define CHANEL fragrance more than a century later.

The Collection That Tells Gabrielle Chanel’s Story

Introduced in 2007, LES EXCLUSIFS DE CHANEL is unlike any other fragrance collection.

Rather than following seasonal trends or commercial launches, it was created to express through perfume what fashion had already expressed through clothing: the soul of Gabrielle Chanel.

Every fragrance is inspired by a chapter of her life.

The places she travelled.

The objects she collected.

The colours she loved.

The symbols she returned to throughout her career.

Today, the collection comprises nineteen fragrances, each presented in the same understated bottle, allowing the composition—not the packaging—to remain the focus. It is a deliberate act of restraint that perfectly reflects Gabrielle Chanel’s belief that true luxury never needs to shout.

The Hidden Symbols of CHANEL

One of the most fascinating moments inside the Harrods salon wasn’t smelling perfume.

It was discovering the secret language of CHANEL.

The camellia.

The lion.

Wheat.

Diamonds.

The comet.

The number five.

Each symbol carries a deeply personal meaning connected to Gabrielle Chanel’s life and continues to appear throughout the House’s fashion, jewellery, beauty and fragrance collections. Once you understand these codes, you begin to see CHANEL differently. Nothing exists by accident. Every detail tells a story.

A Fragrance That Already Knew Me

Before introducing the collection, our CHANEL host asked each guest one simple question.

“What is your favourite time of year?”

Without hesitation, I answered September and October.

The crisp mornings. Golden leaves. Weekend walks across Hampstead Heath with my dog.

She smiled before asking another question.

“What do you love most about those walks?”

I described damp earth after rain, woodland and crunchy red and orange leaves. Without hesitation, she reached for one bottle.

Sycomore.

The moment I smelled it, I wasn’t standing inside Harrods anymore. I was back on Hampstead Heath.

The fragrance transported me so completely that it felt less like discovering a perfume and more like rediscovering a memory. It was the perfect demonstration of what LES EXCLUSIFS DE CHANEL represents. These aren’t fragrances chosen because they smell fashionable. They’re chosen because they tell your story.

Six Fragrances That Tell Gabrielle Chanel’s Story

COROMANDEL

Inspired by Gabrielle Chanel’s treasured Chinese Coromandel screens, this rich amber fragrance recreates the mysterious atmosphere of her apartment at 31 Rue Cambon. Notes of patchouli, benzoin and vanilla evoke polished lacquer, aged wood and hidden rooms filled with extraordinary objects. Like the screens themselves, COROMANDEL slowly reveals its secrets, rewarding those who take the time to explore it.

GARDÉNIA

The camellia became Gabrielle Chanel’s signature flower despite carrying almost no fragrance of its own. Rather than imitating the bloom, CHANEL imagined the scent it might have possessed. Built around jasmine, tuberose, orange blossom and ylang-ylang, GARDÉNIA captures the spirit of the camellia with a luminous, creamy elegance that feels unmistakably feminine.

BOIS DES ILES

Created in 1926, BOIS DES ILES reflects Gabrielle Chanel’s fascination with travel and noble materials. Smooth sandalwood creates a warm, enveloping composition that remains one of the earliest woody amber fragrances created for women, proving just how visionary the House was nearly a century ago.

N°22

Often described as the quieter sister to N°5, N°22 was created just one year later by Ernest Beaux. Powdery aldehydes and creamy tuberose create an intimate skin scent that feels refined, elegant and deeply personal. It’s one of the House’s hidden masterpieces—subtle rather than spectacular, yet impossible to forget.

1957

Named after the year Gabrielle Chanel received the prestigious Neiman Marcus Fashion Award in Dallas, 1957 celebrates the enduring relationship between the House and America. Iris, neroli and cedar-musk create an enveloping fragrance that feels effortlessly modern while honouring one of the defining moments in Gabrielle Chanel’s career.

LE LION DE CHANEL

The lion, Gabrielle Chanel’s zodiac sign and personal emblem, symbolises quiet strength and unwavering confidence. Rich labdanum, patchouli, bergamot, lemon and vanilla combine to create an amber fragrance that is powerful without ever becoming overpowering—an olfactory portrait of the woman herself.

The Ultimate Expression of CHANEL Perfumery

What makes LES EXCLUSIFS DE CHANEL so extraordinary isn’t simply the quality of its ingredients or the beauty of its compositions.

It’s that every fragrance is a portrait. Not of a trend. Not of a season. But of Gabrielle Chanel herself.

Having stood beside Joseph Mul in the May rose fields of Grasse, watched flowers become fragrance and, most recently, experienced the collection inside CHANEL’s private salon at Harrods, one thing became abundantly clear.

These perfumes don’t simply smell beautiful. They preserve a living heritage.

Every bottle carries with it generations of craftsmanship, remarkable raw materials and the extraordinary vision of the woman who transformed fashion—and fragrance—forever.

More than a century after Gabrielle Chanel first challenged Ernest Beaux to create “a woman’s perfume with the scent of a woman,” LES EXCLUSIFS DE CHANEL remains the House’s most intimate invitation into her world.
